What does it mean to sit?

What does it mean to sit? explores the intangible, ephemeral elements of space. This project focused on the Marriott Library Plaza at the University of Utah. I studied the area over a period of several days, mapping, drawing, and taking note of the activity that occurred within the space. Using the information gathered, I designed a new way for the space to come together that would activate underutilized areas and foster new experiences, turning this space into a place.

Timeline: August 2023 - December 2023

Phase 1: Field Work

What ephemeral elements does the space carry?

While sitting in the Marriott Library Plaza, I discovered aspects of the space that I had never considered; What are the intangible elements (ephemeral, emotive) of the space? Are there lonely/vibrant/dull places? What are the imagined narratives? What are the memories, imaginations, and experiences that turn the space into a place?

Phase 2: Deep Mapping

In the final iteration of the deep mapping project, I overlaid all of the individual maps I created in order to form one composition of all the intangible elements of the Marriott Library Plaza. The maps revealed where and why varying emotions and stories were perceived and experienced.

Phase 3: Brainstorming

How can unused areas be activated?

I was really excited about one of my initial ideas of creating an indoor/outdoor green space that would provide students with a new work space. My goal was to utilize and activate the areas of the plaza I had deemed “unused” or “lonely” in the deep mapping project, without disrupting high traffic areas students use to get from class to class. Including greenery within the space was an essential component I knew I wanted to include in order to foster creativity, relaxation, and connectivity back to nature, which is difficult when living in a city.

In order to visualize how my structure would look in the plaza, I photographed the area overlaid a rough sketch. The purpose of these images was to see how the structure would take up space, how it would be shaped, and how its boarders aligned with my end goals for the project.

How can the intangible elements of the space be represented?

Phase 5: Hybrid Drawings

How does this “space” become a “place”?

Phase 4: Hybrid Drawings Ideas

How does my concept fill the existing space?

In the final iterations of this project, I used hybrid drawings to illustrate the atmosphere and general use of the structure. The two smaller images showcase the lower floor, and the larger image combines shows the rooftop area. I used cool tones of blue, gray, and white for the exterior environment, and warm tones of greens and browns for the interior. The contrasting colors give context for the goals I had for the space, by taking its previously dull, unused, and artificial characteristics, and bringing in vibrancy and life that can be enjoyed year-round.
